Accident Summary:
Aircraft number 426 was on a resupply mission for the Koreans at their command post and was picking up its second load of the day which was small arms ammunition and howitzer shell containers plus two passengers which came to a total of about 1000 pounds. This weight was the approximate weight of their first load. The crew stated that it took about 38 pounds torque to hover with this amount earlier. The pilot, Warrant Officer Hallock, was at the controls and when he reached 35 pounds torque, the aircraft had not yet moved so he started down on the collective. When he did this, the ship's left skid came off the ground while the right side stayed on the ground. The aircraft commander, Chief Warrant Officer Warren, at this time took the controls and pushed the collective all the way down in a definite manner while applying left forward cyclic. He stated that this had no effect. The ship was at approximately a 35-45 degree right angle bank and the main rotor blades struck the ground a number of times. I believe this impact demolished the blades and tore the transmission out and flung it to the front forward area near the ship (25 feet). The main rotor blades struck and killed a Korean soldier who was standing about 45-50 feet from the ship watching it. A Korean observer, Kim Myung, CPT S-1, 2d BN. 1st REG ROK stated that both skids left the ground while the aircraft crew stated that only the left skid left the ground. I believe that when the blades hit the ground, the shaking force of impact then caused the right skid to leave the ground momentarily. The right skid was pushed up into the ship and the tail stinger was pushed to the left which means that the right side hit with a great impact
